How Circular Business Models Create Commercial Value

Circular business models are not simply about reducing environmental impact — they can create new forms of commercial value.

Instead of relying solely on selling increasing volumes of new products, circular models create opportunities to generate value across the lifecycle of products, materials and customer relationships.

Models such as resale, repair, rental, refurbishment, remanufacturing and product-as-a-service can create additional revenue streams while extending the useful life and value of existing products.

But the commercial opportunity goes further.

Circular models can help businesses build longer customer relationships, create recurring revenue, increase access to products and services, recover value from existing assets and materials, and reduce exposure to volatile resources and supply chains.

They can also create entirely new markets and partnerships.

The shift is from thinking primarily about units sold towards understanding how value can be created, retained and circulated throughout an ecosystem.

This doesn't mean every circular model will automatically be commercially viable. The model has to be designed around customer behaviour, operational realities, margins and the wider business system.

The opportunity is to find the point where commercial value and circular value reinforce one another — creating businesses that can thrive without depending indefinitely on increasing the production and consumption of new resources.
